1. In 1865, Mississippi passed “Black Codes” that criminalizes unemployment, assembly of free blacks, barred blacks from jury service, testifying against whites in trials, bearing arms and attending white schools.

2. In 1866, Rust College Founded, a historically black liberal arts college located in Holly Springs, Mississippi.  it is the second-oldest private college in the state and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and one of only ten historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) founded before 1868 still to be in operation.

3. In 1874, Robert B. Elliott elected Speaker of the lower house of the South Carolina legislature.

4. In 1874, Stephen A Swails was reelected president pro tem of the senate.

5. In 1880, Southern University established

6. In 1880, The Baptist Foreign Mission, More than 150 delegates from Baptist Churches in eleven states organized the Baptist Foreign Mission Convention of the United States at a meeting in Montgomery, Alabama. Rev. William H. McAlphine was elected president.
