Alice  Walker, Poet, essayist and novelist, was awarded the pulitzer prize on fiction for the book “The Color Purple. ”  It also won the American Book Award for fiction.  The novel later adapted into a hit movie, was told in letters between two sisters, a missionary in Africa and the other living in poverty in rural Georgia. 

Ranked among the top contemporary American writers, Walker was born Feb 9, 1944 in Eatonton, Ga., to sharecropper parents.  The youngest of 12 children, she attended Spelman College in Atlanta and Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1965. 

 Lauded as one of the best modern-day comtemporary American writers, her later novels include “The Temple Of My Familar (1989)”, “Possessing The Secret Of Joy (1992)” and “Everyday Use 1994).”

 4. Dennis “DT” Thomas, Rhythm and Blues Artist (Kool And The Gang) “Celebration

 

5. Mookie Wilson, former Major League Baseball center fielder and current coach for the New York Mets. He played 12 years in baseball for the New York Mets (1980–89) and Toronto Blue Jays (1989–91). He was a switch hitter, known for his impressive speed and positive attitude. Fans would frequently chant “Mooooo-kie” in appreciation of him. He was named New York Mets first base coach for the 2011 season.

 

6. Camille Winbush, Actress (The Bernie Mac Show)  and recording artist. Her work in television has earned her three Image Awards and a Young Artist Award.
