1. In 1750,  The South Carolina Gazette reports that Caesar, a South Carolina slave has been granted his freedom and a life time annuity in exchange for his cures for poison and rattlesnake bite. Caesar and the famous James Derham of New Orleans are two of the earliest known African American medical practitioners.

2. In 1862, General Hunter of the Union Army issued a proclamation freeing the slaves of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. A displeased President Lincoln annulled this act. Lincoln stated, “General Hunter is an honest man…He proclaimed all men free within certain states. I repudiated the proclamation.”

3. In 1867,  Sojourner Truth delivers a speech to the First Annual Meeting o the American Equal Rights Association, championing for the rights of all people.

4. In 1899,  John Albert Burr invented one of the first rotary-blade lawn mowers. Patent number is #624,749.

5. In 1974,  House Judiciary Committee opened hearings to decide whether to recommend the impeachment of President Nixon in the Watergate controversy. Two Blacks Rep. John Conyers of Michigan and Rep. Barbara Jordan of Texas were members of the committee.

6. In 1977,  Mabel Murphy Smythe was confirmed as ambassador to the Republic of Cameroon

7. In 1987,  Eddie Murray, of the Baltimore Orioles, becomes the first baseball player to hit home runs as a switch hitter in 2 consecutive games.

8. In 1994,  First all-race elections In South African held on April 26-29 elects Nelson Mandela the Country’s first Black President.

9. In 1995, Kinshasa, capital of Zaire, is placed under quarantine after an outbreak of the Ebola virus.
