1. In 1862,  Robert Smalls and 12 fellow African American seamen captured the Planter, a cotton steamer converted into a Confederate battleship. Smalls piloted the gunboat into Union lines and presented the ship to the U.S. Navy at Charleston Harbor. Smalls was promoted to Captain during the Civil War

2. In 1871,  Alcorn State University is founded. It is one of over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in America.

3. In 1888, Brazil abolishes Slavery.

4. In 1924,  Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher Got married.  To date they hold the Guinness Book of Records for the longest Marriage being over 84 years for a living couple.

5. In 1969,  Charles Evers Becomes first Black mayor of racially mixed  Fayette Mississippi.
