1. Portia May White, Singer who achieved international fame because of her voice and stage presence. Her popularity helped to open previously closed doors for talented blacks who followed.

2. Oscar Howard, businessman, activist, and minister. In 1956, he opened his own business, Howard’s Catering Co., which managed cafeterias in a number of industrial complexes in the state of Minnesota. In the mid-1960s, Howard took part in the “War On Poverty” program which provided home delivered meals to elderly residents in the inner-city of Minneapolis and St. Paul; some 62,000 were served during that summer.

3. Sam Jones, professional basketball player with the Boston Celtics after graduating from North Carolina Central College. Five time NBA All Star, inducted into the Basketball Hall of fame in 1983.

4. Garland Green, soul singer and pianist. (Let The Good Times Roll)

5. George Stanford Brown, Actor-Director, TV series, “The Rookies,” and the mini-series “Roots.” directed “The Jesse Owens Story,” “In Defense of Kids,” “Ava’s Magical Adventure” and many others. In 1980, he starred in the highly successful Stir Crazy opposite Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. He also had a supporting role in yet another miniseries North & South in 1985 as Grady.

6. Solange Knowles, who performs under the mononym Solange, is an American recording artist, actress and model. Knowles was born and raised in Houston, Texas along with her older sister singer Beyoncé.

7.  Danielle Spencer,  is without a doubt best known for her role as the sarcastic adolescent “Dee Thomas” on the 1970s sitcom  ‘What’s Happening!’ and then in the later ‘What’s Happening Now.’
