1. In 1692, Candy, a slave, was acquitted of sorcery following her trial in Salem, Massachusetts.

2. In 1777, Vermont became the first American colony to abolish slavery. By 1783 slavery was prohibited in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Pennsylvania passed a gradual emancipation law in 1780. Connecticut and Rhode Island barred slavery in 1784 and were followed by New York (gradual emancipation) and New Jersey in 1799 and 1804, respectively. Slavery died in the North as a direct result of forces set in motion by the Rights of Man movement.

3. In 1822, Denmark Vesey and five others were hanged in a desolate marsh outside Charleston,South Carolina.They had been betrayed by black informers who revealed Vesey’s attempt to launch the largest slave rebellionin in the history of the United States.

5. In 1943, Lt. Charles Hall, Brazil, Ind., became first Black pilot to shoot down Nazi plane.

6. In 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. attends the signing ceremony of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at the White House. The Civil Rights Bill with public accommodations and fair employment section signed By President L.B. Johnson.

7. In 1990, “Devil in a Blue Dress”, a mystery novel by Walter Moseley set in South-Central Los Angeles, is published. Its realism and strong African American characters will earn its author enthusiastic praise and a nomination for best novel by the Mystery Writers of America.

8. In 1991, President George Bush nominated conservative black Clarence Thomas to replace Thurgood Marshall.

9. In 2001, Robert Tools becomes the first recipient in the world of the Abiocor, self contained artificial heart at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
