1. In 1847, President Joseph Jenkins Roberts, a native of Virginia, declared Liberia an independent republic.

4. In 1865, Patrick Francis Healy, first Black awarded Ph.D. degree, passed final examination at Louvain in Belgium.

5. In 1926, National Bar Association incorporated.

6. In 1926, Spingarn Medal awarded to Carter G. Woodson for “ten years devoted service in collecting and publishing the records of the Negro in America.”

7. In 1948, Bob Howard became one of the first Black male hosts on television. The New York CBS affiliate hired the Black entertainer to star in The Bob Howard Show.

8. In 1948, President Truman Signed Executive order No. 9981 which made equal opportunity and treatment for all in the U.S. Armed Forces a Requirement.

9. In 1951, The Army announces that it is disbanding the 24th Infantry Regiment, its last and oldest all African American regiment, in order to integrate all White and African American troops in the Korean War zone.

10. In 1997, Independence Day for the Republic of Liberia

11. In 1998, Larry Doby, the first African American in major league baseball’s American League, and Joe Rogan, a player in the Negro Leagues, are inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
